Super Eagles Lack Infrastructure… Balogun

By Olayinka Elebute
Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun has challenged the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF to do the needful for the development of the game in the country if they want to produce the next ‘Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo’ from the team.
He also hit out at the NFF over some of the inhumane treatments they give to the Super Eagles players and coaches.
The Rangers of Scotland defender who discloses this in a video trending on the internet noted that provision of infrastructure such as accommodation, permanent home ground for the team as well as good pitches are key to the development of the game in the country.
“Why can’t other players perform in the Super Eagles?,” the former Brighton and Hove Albion started in a radio programme
“Well, we have to be honest, we are not being provided with the best infrastructure. It starts with accommodation and goes on to pitches and all those kind of things.
“I know I am very outspoken and some people when they hear that, they might come after me but I don’t care.
“If you want to see us soar, then you need to make sure back home in Nigeria we have the best possibilities.
“Why don’t we have a base in Nigeria like we have St James’ Park in England? We don’t have something like that.”
Super Eagles of Nigeria for over decade do not have a particular home stadium for their home matches.
The team’s home matches have been moving from Delta, Uyo, Benin and recently to Lagos, a situation stakeholders agree is inimical to the development of football and stability of the team.
He also mentioned the issue of unpaid bonuses. The players have not been paid their bonus for the Afcon qualifier, while the coach Gernot Rohr and his assistants are owed a backlog of salaries.
“Then you’ve spoken of unpaid bonuses. It’s not a secret even, they contradict themselves said things have been paid, then they admit they haven’t been paid,” Balogun added.
