Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked widespread criticism and calls for reform within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The Super Eagles were knocked out of the World Cup qualifiers by DR Congo, ending their hopes of participating in the tournament in Mexico, the United States, and Canada next year.
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has thrown his hat into the ring, expressing interest in becoming the NFF President. Mikel, a vocal critic of the current NFF leadership, has pledged to prioritize transparency and accountability if he takes the helm. “When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready. But again, I won’t have corruption tied to me,” he said.
The NFF is under pressure to act, with many calling for the current leadership to step down and make way for fresh faces. As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations draws closer, the future of Nigerian football hangs in the balance.
