A 14 year – old primary six pupil of the EKAN primary school Makurdi, Mary Iorlumun has expressed growing optimism that it was in her chosen career in Tennis that she would achieve greater heights in life.

Iolumun who after defeating her elder sister Eunice, to emerge winner of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN U-14 Open Tennis tournament held in Makurdi recently, represented Benue state at the week – long CBN sponsored event a fortnight ago in Lagos where she came second thereby smiling home with a giant size trophy to her credit.

The teenager whose role model is Serena Williams, explained her dreams as always being that,” I want to capture the world in Tennis by playing better than Serena Williams”.

Just as the Williams family of Serena and her sister Venus, Tennis runs in the veins of the Iorlumun family, Mary and her elder sister Eunice as confirmed when upon return from Lagos after the U-14 tourney, both siblings with other athletes, competed in the Adebayo Seeds Memorial Tennis tournament in Makurdi and won a bag of rice for taking second behind her elder sister, Eunice.

She attributed the success in all that she was doing in sports to constant training, moral discipline and encouragement she had been receiving from her parents, revealing that,” if I have the opportunity to go professional in Tennis abroad, I will go with my parents to live with me there”.

The young and aspiring star expressed appreciation to the Benue State Sports Council and her coaches, particularly coach Oddy who took her to Lagos to showcase her talent and always standing behind them, to ensuring that their dreams became reality.
