Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has said about 53% of travellers give bribes to workers and officials at the Lagos and Abuja international airports.

The ICPC Chairman, Ekpo Nta, said this, while unveiling a report on the Corruption Risk Assessment done on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The report was part of activities to mark the World’s Anti-Corruption Day celebration, which held on Friday.

The ICPC chairman said the recommendations of the report would be presented to the aviation agencies for implementation.

He added that one of the findings by the ICPC investigators was that there was no unified Standard of Operation at the airports, which gave room for bribery among the workers.

He said, “This CRA is a response to the wide negative media reports and complaints of corruption occurring in the Nigerian airports, focusing particularly on the MMIA, Lagos and NAIA, Abuja, which account for 74 per cent of international flights and movements of air passengers.”

“In the survey done during the report, 62.2 per cent of passengers confirmed that officials normally demanded bribes when carrying out duties, while 52.5 per cent of passengers confirmed that they had had cause to give a bribe at one time or the other to airport officials. Also, 55.7 per cent said the integrity of airport officials is very low.

“This report was undertaken by the ICPC with the support and collaboration of the United Nations Development Programme to identify corruption risks and to design adequate responses to curb the growing incidence.”

The ICPC chairman said searchlights would also be beamed on the health and education sectors, as complaints of gross corruption in the two aspects of national life had reached the commission.
