The final stage of the 2025 Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) National Volleyball Premier League has commenced, with organizers highlighting their commitment to player welfare, competition standards, and volleyball development in Nigeria.
Representing the Comptroller -General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Sports Secretary Samuel Onikeku expressed satisfaction with the league’s progress since its debut last year. “The CGC prioritized players, allocating 70% of last year’s budget directly to athletes,” Onikeku said. “Adjustments were made in 2025 to boost welfare and fairness, including increased team subsidies from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000.”
The league boasts impressive prize money, with the winner set to receive ₦5 million, the runner-up ₦3 million, and the third-place finisher ₦2 million. Individual awards for players come with a prize money of ₦100,000 each.
The Nigerian Volleyball Federation (NVBF) has also been praised for starting the league earlier this year, allowing teams to prepare for international competitions. Onikeku assured that sponsorship challenges will not come from the CGC’s side, urging the federation to continue in this direction to raise the standard of volleyball in Nigeria.
The final stage of the league is set to be exciting, with top teams battling for the top prizes. Onikeku declared the games open on behalf of the Comptroller General of Customs, wishing the teams well and expecting worthy winners to emerge.
