A one-day annual Joe Blankson Swimming Competition was held over the weekend at the Swimming pool of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Package B, Abuja.<\/p>\n
The competition which\u00a0 consists of children from various schools student\u00a0 across FCT ranging from ages of 8-13<\/p>\n
She said, \u201cThe program is to honour what my husband died for. So, I set up a swimming Competition to show the world the importance of swimming.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists during the\u00a0 Competition, Mercy Joe Blankson, the founder, Joe Blankson Foundation said the event was held in remembrance of her husband who died while saving 14 lives in Boat mishap on his way to his community in Bokana Rivers state.<\/p>\n
She added that, \u201cJoe Blankson died saving people in water, he was travelling to his home town, Bakana, and in the process their boat capsized and he was able to save 13 but in the process of saving the live of the 14th person he lost his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that was what led to the establishment of the foundation, and\u00a0 the Foundation is to teach children and adults how to swim, swimming, aside being an exercise, is also a mean of survival .<\/p>\n
She added that the foundation target is to promote swimming across Africa, \u201cIt is a swimming competition for children to promote sport across Africa. 36 children are participated in the competition.<\/p>\n
The children are from different schools in FCT and they competed in three categories\u00a0 U-8, U-11 and U13.<\/p>\n
