Yakubu Calls For Creative Midfielder To Bolster Super Eagles Attack

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Ayegbeni has urged the national team to recruit a creative midfielder who can provide quality passes to the strikers. Ayegbeni, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, believes that despite Alex Iwobi’s efforts, the team lacks a playmaker who can deliver precise passes to the forwards.

“We still need a creative midfielder in the team who can pass the ball to the strikers. We don’t have that. Alex is not the guy who can pass the ball to the striker. He is just buzzing around, getting the ball, passing it sideways,” Ayegbeni said, highlighting the team’s struggles in creating scoring opportunities.

Ayegbeni, who played alongside the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha, lamented the lack of creative midfielders in the current team. “We don’t have Jay-Jay [Okocha] anymore. The problem we have with the national team is that we have too many defensive midfielders,” he added, emphasizing the need for a different approach.

With the 2025 AFCON just around the corner, Ayegbeni’s comments have sparked a debate about the team’s tactical approach and player selection. As the Super Eagles look to bounce back from a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign, finding a creative spark in midfield could be crucial to their success.
