Sunshine Stars football club of Akure reached the 2024 President Federation cup men’s round of 16 stage with a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Plateau United football club of Jos after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.
Both sides started slowly with few chances created but the Plateau United FC team held possession for most part of the first 45 minutes.
On resumption of the second half, Plateau United FC fight hard, when Muhammed Umar opened scoring in the 49th minute to give his team assurance in the competition.
Both team continues to fought hard in the remaining time, In the four minute added time, just few seconds to ends the game, Opeoluwa Olufemi of sunshine stars FC scored with a shot into the net to equalised the game.
The Plateau United FC attack back but resulted to nothing as the referee sounds the final whistle. The game ended 1-1 .
With neither side could deliver the winner with the game ending 1-1 and going to penalties, which appeared to be a surprise to the players.

Speaking after the match, Sunshine Stars FC coach , Kennedy Boboye, said today victory wasn’t a easy one, our team were just lucky that the game ended in penalty shootout and it’s then favored us.
He said that the team played against a good side and a tactical side from the same Nigeria Premier league ( NPFL) sides and I commended my players for playing well today.
“ I will keep pushing on in the competition by approaching every game with sense of seriousness and determination this one has come and gone,” he said.
On his part, Mbuaz Mangut , coach Plateau United , said that my team lost concentration in the 70th minute of the play.
“ Our opponents took the chances to equalised from behind and they also converted their penalty shootouts to get the desired victory,” he said.
“ We hope to come back fully prepared next season and fight back to supersede this stage.
“ Our Team will change focus and we will be concentrating on the NPFL season remaining games,” he said.
