Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has signed the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission Law Cap 69 Bill recently passed by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, into law.
The Governor signed the new bill on Monday in his office in Uyo.
With the amendment, the AKISIEC Law will update the electoral laws in the State.
It will enhance efficiency in the electoral process at the grassroots level, provides legal backing and aligns the activities of AKISIEC in the conduct of local government elections.
Also, the law will help instill more confidence in the electoral process in the State.
AKISIEC is also, expected to come up with a programmes of action that will culminate in the conduct of local government elections in the state
In a related development, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Elder Aniedi-Abasi Ikoiwak has expressed hope that the legal frame work signed by the Governor will empower the Commission to conduct a successful Local Government Election in the state.
The Chairman in a telephone chat said, “the law has been signed, it is now left for us as a Commission to look at the law the way it is and see how we can come up with a programme for the local government elections”.
He thanked the Governor for assenting into law the AKISIEC amendment bill and also commended the State House of Assembly for passing the bill into law.
