Nigerian Boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore Suspended For Doping Ahead Of Paris Olympics”

Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance, the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced on Saturday. The test revealed the presence of furosemide, a diuretic listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list, collected during an out-of-competition doping control on Thursday.

“The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules,” the ITA stated. This suspension prevents Ogunsemilore from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any Olympic activities during the Paris 2024 Games.

Ogunsemilore, a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and African Games champion, was scheduled to face Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round of 16 bout on Tuesday. The suspension has left Nigeria’s boxing team with only Adam Olaore as the sole medal hopeful. Olaore is set to compete against Kazakhstan’s Aibeck Oralbay on Sunday morning in the first preliminary round.

This incident comes as a blow to Nigeria’s boxing hopes at the Olympics, a sport that once brought the nation glory but has seen a decline in recent editions, with the last medal won in Atlanta 1996.
