Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), has reiterated the federation’s commitment to discovering and developing young weightlifting talents across the country. Speaking at the Lead British International School’s inter-house sports competition in Abuja, Dr. Abdul emphasized the importance of starting from the grassroots to build a strong foundation for the sport.
“We are targeting the young ones, and we’re starting from scratch,” Dr. Abdul said. “There’s no better place to start than in schools, where we can build from the ground up.”
The NWF president revealed that the federation has a comprehensive program in place to identify and nurture talents nationwide. “This will be a continuous program, and we’ll be visiting all states, particularly at the grassroots level, to discover and develop talents that will become our next Olympians.”
Nigeria’s weightlifting team has an impressive track record, having won several laurels in international competitions over the years. In 2021, the team won four gold medals, two silver, and three bronze medals at the World Championships in Uzbekistan.
Looking ahead to 2025, Dr. Abdul disclosed that the NWF has a packed calendar, with competitions lined up including the World Championship in Norway, Youth Games in Ghana, weightlifting competitions in Mauritius, and the National Sports Festival, among others.
With the federation’s focus on grassroots development and its rich history of success, it’s clear that Nigeria’s weightlifting team is poised for continued excellence on the global stage.
