Samson Siasia, the former Nigeria U-23 coach, has debunked the news that he requested $50,000 from Mikel Obi to play in the Rio Olympics. The 57 years old former Nigerian international disclose in an exclusive interview that he never requested for such amount from Mikel and his Agent.
” I have seen a lot on the Internet. How can I request $50,000 from a player like Mikel obi and his agent just for Mikel to be in the team. That is not possible”.
Siasia however appeal to Mikel obi and his Agent John Ola Shittu to ignore fake news from the internet.he said ” I am appealing to Mikel and Shittu. When Mikel was with the team, he did very well for the team and me in person during the Olympics and John is also a friend so I can never spoil their name out there in public like that. What the social media is saying about us is not true. Mikel helped us financially at the Olympics.He has done well for the country and for himself in general” he concluded.
Mikel Obi played for Nigeria in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he led the team to a bronze medal victory in the men’s football tournament. They defeated Honduras 3-2 in the bronze medal match on August 20, 2016. This achievement marked Nigeria’s first Olympic medal in any sport since 2008.
As the team’s captain, Mikel Obi played a crucial role in their success, scoring a goal in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Denmark in the quarterfinals and assisting all three goals in the bronze medal match against Honduras. His leadership and skills were instrumental in securing the bronze medal for Nigeria.
