City FC Abuja is gearing up for the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) season with a new team jersey and a confident squad. The team unveiled its new colors in a vibrant ceremony at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, followed by a 4-0 thrashing of NAF FC in a friendly match.
Chairman and CEO Chidi Okonkwo stated that the unveiling marked a fresh chapter in the club’s journey as one of the capital’s rising football teams. He expressed confidence that the team is poised for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), having narrowly missed out in previous seasons.
“This time, with the level of preparation and confidence in the squad, I don’t think anything will stop us,” Okonkwo said. He highlighted the team’s strong logistics and technical setup, citing a recent international tournament in Tanzania as proof of their capabilities.
As City FC prepares to face Lobi Stars in their opening league match, Okonkwo expects nothing but a win. “We are not going to share points with Lobi Stars. If we want promotion, we must make a statement,” he said.
The team’s head coach, Yamoah Richard, echoed Okonkwo’s optimism, attributing the team’s success to its commitment to grassroots development. NAF FC head coach Suleiman Ibrahim blamed his team’s loss on fatigue, while NAF FC captain Kassa Jeffrey praised City FC’s performance and promised improvement from his own side.
The event highlighted the growing unity among football stakeholders in the FCT, with Okonkwo noting that past internal rivalries had hindered the region’s chances of producing a Premier League team.
