Nigeria’s Super Eagles are one step away from securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Gabon 4-1 in the CAF playoff semifinals. Their next match is against DR Congo on November 16 in Rabat, Morocco, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico.
The FIFA ranking will play a crucial role in determining Nigeria’s path to the World Cup. If the Super Eagles rank among the top two teams, they’ll bypass the semifinals in Mexico and directly compete in the final round, requiring only one win to qualify. However, if they rank outside the top two, they’ll need to win two consecutive knockout matches in Mexico.
Nigeria is currently ranked 41st globally and 5th in Africa, which puts them in a favorable position. A win against DR Congo would set up a potentially easier route to qualification. The intercontinental playoffs will feature six teams from five continents competing for two remaining World Cup spots.
The Super Eagles have been on a rollercoaster journey, with inconsistent performances in the group stage, but they’ve managed to secure a spot in the playoffs. With key players like Victor Osimhen in top form, Nigeria is hopeful of making it to the World Cup for the first time since 2018.
