Three Nigerian ladies have taken it upon themselves to make this nation proud by being the first to represent the nation in the ice sport called Bobsled. Having taken the initial expenses on their own, they took to the crowd funding platform to raise the $150,000 they will need to support their quest and ambition.
As at this evening, people have started to invest confidence in them by putting in $865. Though it looks a long way but if people will rise and drop even a Dollar, destination starts getting shorter.
Explaining why she did what she started, the prolific sprinter wrote, “I am not a believer of “coincidence” – rather a God-fearing woman who understands that blessings are bestowed upon us when we maximize opportunities and operate with a selfless heart. My name is Seun Adigun, and I am the driver of the aspirant 2018 Winter Olympic Nigerian Women’s Bobsled Team.
Since I was a child, my passion for sports has truly been unmatched. I was convinced I would be the first woman in the NBA, but eventually softened those ambitions to focus on a more natural talent – sprinting. I competed in track & field for University of Houston, and went on to become a three-time 100m hurdle Nigerian National Champion and 2012 Olympian for the country. To this day, I don’t know why I did not make the announcement of my retirement from track in 2012, but in 2015 the professional athlete in me was revived.
By 2016, I was inspired to start the Nigerian Women’s Bobsled team in hopes of being the first ever African representative, men or women, to qualify for the Winter Olympic Games in the sport of Bobsled.
Starting the Nigerian Women’s Bobsled team was not an easy decision, but I know it will be one of the most impactful things I will ever initiate. The fate of Nigeria’s eligibility to be represented in the 2018 Winter Olympics rests exclusively on my ability to qualify as a competent driver. I decided to accept this responsibility and recruited two wonderful young women, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga, as my brakemen.
This incredible ambition towards athletic excellence is not possible to accomplish without raising the necessary funds – and that’s where you all come in!
As the driver, I am individually responsible for the vast majority of team and operational expenses. The 2016-2017 season has already begun, which has required me to jumpstart my spending to get everything set up. This has become increasingly difficult to uphold financially because I am entering my final year as a post-graduate student. I am concurrently completing a dual degree programme composed of a Doctorate of Chiropractic (DC) and a Master’s of Science in Sports Science (MS).
Between now and the 2018 Winter Games, I need to raise $150,000 to successfully execute this historic run and support my team. While this may seem like a hefty amount, I’m confident that with your help, I can meet and even surpass this goal. I have created a plan that will divide this sum into phases so that it can strategically be achieved.
I will need to fund things such as:
- A bobsled for practice and competition
- Sled Runners (blades on the base)
- Tools for the sled
- Ice time (for learning how to drive)
- Cost of shipping the sled to different tracks
- Transportation, lodging, travel expenses for myself and my brake (wo)men
- Winter gear (shoes, jackets, spikes, travel bags, etc) for myself and my brake (wo)men
- Team Competition gear (helmets, uniforms, practice gear, etc)
- Athlete insurance for myself and my brake(wo)man
- Miscellaneous (registration and membership fees)
Although, I am spearheading the team, this movement has grown to be far larger than me or any one person. The success of this bobsled team will positively affect millions of people all over the world and will represent monumental international advancements in social, athletic, and economic statuses. Together, we can demonstrate that nothing is impossible with a little faith, support and willingness to persevere.
