Adelabu Promises Stable Electricity Nationwide Before 2027

Nigerians can expect uninterrupted power supply across the country before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2027, according to Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.

Adelabu gave the assurance on Friday during the commissioning of the Kwaru 1X15MVA 33/11KV injection substation in the Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos.

He said the federal government is tackling longstanding problems in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution through a coordinated strategy designed to stabilise and transform the sector.

Energy is not just a commodity; it’s the foundation of economic growth and job creation,” Adelabu said, reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s pledge to deliver full and uninterrupted electricity supply before the end of its first term.

President Tinubu had made stable electricity a key part of his 2023 campaign platform. While critics point to slow progress, Adelabu maintained that the administration remains on track to fulfil its promise within four years.

Recent reforms, including the Electricity Act 2023, have decentralised the power sector and allowed the emergence of a dozen state-level electricity markets.

The government has also attracted over $2 billion in fresh investments and boosted generation capacity to 14GW, with peak output reaching over 5,800MW as of March 2025.

Transmission capacity has grown with the addition of 700MW to the national grid under the Siemens-led upgrade project. Meanwhile, a major metering initiative funded by both FAAC and the World Bank aims to install millions of meters across the country to reduce energy losses and improve billing accuracy.

Despite these gains, Adelabu acknowledged that serious challenges persist, particularly within the distribution segment. Issues such as high loss rates, inadequate remittances, and erratic service continue to hinder progress.

He said the ministry is working closely with electricity distribution companies to overcome these obstacles and improve reliability for consumers.

He also commended Ikeja Electric for delivering the newly commissioned substation within 12 months, calling the company one of the best-performing distribution companies in Nigeria.

The Kwaru substation is expected to significantly improve electricity supply to surrounding communities including Abaranje, Isijola, Igando Road, Omoboriowo, and Okerube.

The minister noted that the improved service will support small businesses, boost job creation, and contribute to local economic development.

“This project represents what is possible when commitment and technical excellence meet,” Adelabu said.
