The African Students Football Union (ASFU) and the entire Nigerian football fraternity mourn the profound loss of one of our most illustrious sons, Prince Peter Rufai, who passed away on the 3rd of July after a brief illness. He was 61.
Prince Peter Rufai, affectionately known across the continent as ‘Dodo Mayana,’ was not just a legendary goalkeeper for our beloved Super Eagles; he was a towering figure, a true ambassador, and a staunch advocate for the values that ASFU holds dear.
As a respected Ambassador of our Union, Prince Rufai’s commitment to the “town and gown” philosophy – the synergistic relationship between academic pursuit and community engagement – was unwavering.
He lived and breathed the belief that football, truly the “opium of the people,” possessed the unique power to bridge divides, inspire youth, and foster holistic development.
Dodo Mayana’s contributions to Nigerian football are etched in the annals of history. From his commanding presence between the sticks to his iconic leadership on and off the pitch, he epitomized dedication, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
He was a cornerstone of the Super Eagles team that brought joy and pride to millions, including the unforgettable 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the exhilarating journey to our debut FIFA World Cup.
His saves were legendary, his persona larger than life, and his impact immeasurable.
Beyond the pitch, Prince Rufai seamlessly transitioned into a role of mentorship and advocacy. He understood intrinsically that the future of African football lay in nurturing young talent and providing them with not just sporting opportunities but also educational foundations.
His tireless work with ASFU underscored this conviction, as he consistently championed initiatives that integrated academic learning with football development, ensuring that our student-athletes were not just stars on the field but well-rounded individuals prepared for life beyond the game.
His belief in football as a unifying force, a tool for social cohesion, and a vehicle for positive change resonated deeply with the core tenets of ASFU. He saw the game not just as a sport, but as a powerful medium to instill values, build character, and empower a generation.
The ASFU extends its deepest condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigerian Football Federation, and the countless fans across Africa and beyond who were touched by his brilliance and his humanity. “We have lost a legend, a mentor, and a true friend”.
While we grieve his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life of Prince Peter Rufai. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of African student-athletes and football enthusiasts to pursue their dreams with passion, integrity, and a commitment to their communities.
His spirit will forever echo in the stadiums and lecture halls where the “town and gown” philosophy thrives.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
