2028 Sports Festival will be hosted by Bayelsa, these are the words of the Governor of Bayelsa State Senator Douye Diri, who has declared that hosting the 24th National Sports Festival (NSF) in the year 2028 remains one of its top priorities in the remaining part of his administration by building the ongoing 25,000 sitting capacity stadium at Igbogene to serve as a major facility for the event.
Diri stated this on Wednesday July 23, 2025 during the 166th Executive Council Meeting inside the executive council Chambers in Government House Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, while receiving the Bayelsa State contingent that were part of the recently concluded 22nd National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta Ogun State.
The Governor stated that sports and its glory has permanently come to stay in Bayelsa State amongst the comity of states in the nation.
Earlier, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for sports Development Chief Baraladei Daniel Igali in giving a run down of members of Team Bayelsa’s experiences at the games stated that a lot of Sports, politics and foul practices were on display at the competition.
Honourable Igali, however averred that with the status the state has attained in Sports in the country a podium finish of every sports that she participates on is now guaranteed, regardless of any malpractice from would be authorities if the given engagement.
Highlight of the occasion was the Governor doling out cash prizes of various sums to medalists, coaches, secretaries, support staff etc.
