Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, expressed his commitment to supporting the NSC in fulfilling its mission for the advancement of sports in Nigeria during a visit to the NSC at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
He emphasized a renewed sense of optimism for Nigerian sports, particularly congratulating NSC Chairman Malam Shehu Dikko for his leadership, which he believes is a positive step for the future of sports in the country. The Customs Service is fully behind the commission’s efforts.
Adeniyi also revealed that Nigeria will host the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Cub Competition in Abuja from April 1 to 14, 2025. The Nigeria Customs Service women’s team, the only Nigerian team participating in the championship, is focused on winning. He noted that the NCS values sports, as the success of its officers is tied to possessing athletic qualities.
He assured that with diligent preparations, the women’s team aims to meet the expectations of Nigerians and called for the support of the NSC to help secure a victory in the tournament. Additionally, the Customs Service plans to donate buses for use by various sports federations to transport national teams.
In response, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko acknowledged the Customs Service’s contributions to sports development and assured them of government backing. He highlighted that the current administration, led by President Tinubu, is committed to hosting numerous competitions to foster athlete development and maintain infrastructure.
The championship will take place from April 1 to 14 and will be supported by the Nigerian Customs Service, whose women’s volleyball team qualified after winning the Nigeria Volleyball League in 2024. The African Women’s Volleyball Championship is the premier competition for African women’s national volleyball teams, organized by the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB), and is held biannually. Kenya is the reigning champion, having secured its tenth title at the 2023 tournament in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
