President of Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Ifedayo Akindoju has said that Team Nigeria Tennis players have the capacity to excel at the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III qualifying stage in Abuja from 16th to 21st July, 2024.
Akindoju, who stated this at a press briefing on Saturday in Abuja, said Nigeria has a growing Tennis talent pool and with dedication and hard work, they can compete effectively against other teams.
“With a mix of experienced players in Nigeria team, the five players to represent are Christopher Bulus, Wilson Igbinovia, Uche Oparaoji and newly invited players Michael Emmanuel and Daniel Adeleye.
“Davis Cup is a prestigious international team competition in Tennis, often referred to as the World Cup of Tennis and there are various stages to this tournament,which is played all around the world.
The Vice President of the Confederation of Africa Tennis Zone ll also said there won’t be any formal draws for the competition as it would be round robin.
“Each team will play a round robin format with the other teams.There will be two singles and a doubles match format for each team’s five matches.
“At the end of the day, the ranking will be released based on each team’s performance and the top three teams will advance to the next stage while the bottom two teams will be relegated and one team will remain in the group III,” he said.
He added, “There are six teams taking part in this competition.The play is scheduled to begin on Tuesday and will run until July 20.
“The team that are going to be competing here are as follows, Nigeria (host), Benin Republic, Zimbawe, Namibia, Cote d’ivore and Ghana. Federation is spending about N100 million to stage this event. We have received grants from the ITF for a portion of it and we are also sourcing it locally from our sponsors.”
