Sunday was another bad day for Nigerian cricket followers as the U19 Men’s Cricket team fell woefully to Tanzania, who thrashed the West African cricket powerhouse by 122 runs.
Following a slopy loss to Namibia on Day 1, the Nigerian cricket family was hopeful to see the Junior Yellow Greens in a better shape on Day 2. However, the team slipped into its lowest ebb under a more cerebral Tanzania team.
and the Tanzanian captain, Laksh Bakrania, won the toss and opted to bat first. The Nigerian team started on a good note by taking out danger-man, Karim Kiseto, but a new kid, Darpan Jobanputra, emerged with intelligent ODI batting that impressed his parent and Nigerian fans alike.
Captain Bakrania, Jobanputra, and Mohamedi Simba top the batting with 44, 32, and 19 runs each to add up 154 run on score board for Tanzania.
In the second inning, Nigerians were looking up to Ali Rahmon, but they were disappointed with his early mistake and dismissal. Ali scored only 4 runs off 14 balls. His exit poisoned other batters who could not score beyond 4 runs. It was only Peculiar Egemasi that batted 7 runs off 13 balls. Nigeria’s total was 32 runs all out in 16.1 over
Sadly, all Nigerian batters were dismissed without facing 3 overs (18 balls) in a 50 overs match. These statistics angered most Nigerian fans. While some blamed the poor results on the indiscipline of the players, others faulted the T20 structure that dominated Nigerian cricket competitions.
Nigeria’s hope of going to the World Cup as the female counterpart hangs on a thread.
The tournament will continue on Tuesday after Monday’s rest day.
