A delegation from the Nigeria Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), led by Prof. Mariam Suleiman, visited Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), in Abuja last Friday.
NAWIS is a non-governmental organization focused on promoting the involvement and development of girls and women in sports across Nigeria.
The delegation’s visit underscores NAWIS’s confidence in the NSC’s new approach, which aims to integrate athlete contributions and drive meaningful change.
During the meeting, the NAWIS president presented ten recommendations for the NSC’s consideration. Key suggestions included appointing qualified women to leadership roles in sports, regularly training and updating women coaches and technical staff, prioritizing the welfare of female athletes—both current and retired—including their funding and overall support, engaging women in marketing and sponsorship efforts, ensuring qualified female officials manage women’s sports matters, and providing chaperones for female teams.
These recommendations aim to enhance women’s roles in Nigerian sports, acknowledging their vital contributions to the nation’s success in competitions.
Prof. Suleiman highlighted that Nigerian female athletes have continually secured medals, underscoring their importance in both grassroots and elite sports.
She also stressed the need to treat female athletes with the highest level of care.
Furthermore, Suleiman expressed NAWIS’s commitment to supporting the NSC, emphasizing the organization’s readiness to collaborate and make positive contributions to the development of sports in Nigeria.
