Oliseh: National Team’s Poor Performance Affects Osimhen, Lookman’s Club Careers

By Bosun Adeyemi

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has pinpointed the reason behind Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman not playing for top European clubs. According to Oliseh, the duo’s current teams, Galatasaray and Atalanta, are not top-tier clubs because the Nigerian national team is no longer a dominant force.

Oliseh drew comparisons to Nigeria’s golden era in the 90s, when top players like Nwankwo Kanu (Arsenal), Taribo West (Inter Milan and AC Milan), Finidi George, and Tijjani Babangida (Ajax) played for elite clubs. Oliseh himself played for Borussia Dortmund and Juventus during that period.

The Super Eagles’ decline is evident, having failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and now facing uncertainty about qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Oliseh’s comments highlight the correlation between a national team’s performance and the opportunities available to its top players in top European leagues.
