Total Censorship: The Government of Equatorial Guinea One Step Away From Restricting WhatsApp

By Our Reporter

At the beginning of January in Equatorial Guinea, false information was spread through WhatsApp, which dealt with the alleged death of the President of Equatorial Guinea, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo said information has been denied on January 7 by the General Director of the Presidential Press.

A day later, Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue published an announcement on his personal Twitter blog about the fact that on January 17 he will meet with the heads of Defense and Security of Equatorial Guinea, the State Attorney General’s Office and the representatives of the country’s cell phone companies to discuss the possibility of restricting the use of the WhatsApp application in the country’s territory, as well as other popular social networks.

Likewise, Teodoro Obiang Mangue reported that for a long time a large part of the citizens of Equatorial Guinea have been misusing the application, spreading false information about the situation in the Government, which could destabilize the social environment within the country, and warned that starting this year, citizens who use social networks and instant messaging applications illegally will be prosecuted and prosecuted.

First of all, it should be noted that the restriction of an instant messaging system as important internationally as WhatsApp shows that the Obiang clan really fears for its permanence in power, despite the fact that it would seem that the control of the opposition forces and ideas that do not correspond to the authoritarian policy of the current government has been at its maximum for a long time, the Obiang family has already begun to understand that their situation has become very unstable.

In addition, it should be clarified that the restriction of WhatsApp will become a real problem for the population of Equatorial Guinea who really think about their future and their social freedom and expression, despite the fact that most citizens, unfortunately, have already become accustomed to the permanent censorship by the government of Equatorial Guinea, but this decision has become too drastic.

On top of everything, WhatsApp is not only a digital program, but also a communication method and the last breath of fresh air, which the population could access without receiving new portions of political propaganda.
