Nigeria wheelchair tennis team on Friday trounced their Cameroonian counterparts 3-0 in the men’s round robin Group C game at the ongoing 2024 BNP Paribas World Team Cup wheelchair tennis African qualification in Abuja.
In the second group match of the round robin tie, Nigeria’s Wasiu Yusuf and Terlumun Ukari picked up wins in the singles. Yusuf displaying a high level of play in the match utilising the lead by two straight sets (6-2,6-1) while Ukari did same against another Cameroonian, Alhadji Mouhaman also in two straight sets (6-1,6-0).
In the same vein, Alex Adewale and Ukari won in the doubles against Cameroon’s duo of Moise Garcia Ndjalong Doto and Alhadji Mouhaman (6-1,6-1).
The Nigerian trio of Yusuf, Ukari and Adewale will now play their semifinal match of the round robin tie on Saturday .
Adewale, while speaking with journalists after the game said, “We will go back and prepare for our next game.
“Our team will continue to remain focus and tighten our belt well and all that came for the qualifiers in Abuja are determined to get the tickets and so are we.
On his part, Nigeria’s coach, Frank Tarmina praised his team for a job well. He said the team is ready to confront their next opponents on Saturday. ”
We will go back and planned for our next opponent on Saturday to make sure that we maintained our win,” he said.
Others men singles matches saw Fouad Boughnim of Morocco beat Nooreshan Alleeare of Mauritius (6-0,6-0)
Boughnim’s compatriot, Lhaj Boukartacha beat Matthieu Lambin also of Mauritius (6-0,6-0). South Africa’s Eliphas Evans Marina defeated Rajab Abdallah Athman of Kenya (6-0,6-0) .
In the Women’s singles, Mariska Venter of South Africa reigned supreme over Lucy Shirima of Tanzania (6-0,6-0). Among others, Kgothatso Montjane of South Africa who beat Rehema Selemani of Tanzania (6-0,6-0) and Phoe Masika of Kenya who defeated Sama Hadad of Egypt (6-1,6-0).
