Oputa Oluchukeu has been Okon’s coach from time past. He took charge of the nascent news maker when he was younger, when people had written him off for being too slim and small in size, no coach wanted to touch him, that was why I named him Alika meaning Lizard.
The new 100m champion later corroborated his coach’s statement on why his friends call him Alika.
According to him, “I was very slim and tiny also while growing up, but God gave me talent which people are seeing today.
On when he became so expectant for the 100m title, Okon said, “tts been long but being patient did it for me, I never expected it this quick but providence smiled on me and my Coach”
Okon whose parents came from Akwa-Ibom State was born in Delta State and was known and called Alika.
When Okon won the 100m title, the stadium erupted into “Alika the home boy” only a few know him as Okon in Delta State.
Before now AthIetics had taken Okon Alika to Zambia, Kenya, Trinidad and Tobago for world AthIetics competitions, but had never made it this huge on home soil.
Interestingly, fwor guiding the new 100m sensation Okon Israel Alika to stardom at the Africa Games trials in Asaba his coach Oputa Oluchukeu has been offered automatic employment by the Delta Sport Commission.
The coach expressed gratitude to the state government for such favour following his AthIete’s prowess at the trials in Asaba.
