Youth Power: Garba Lawal Pushes For New Faces In Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles star Garba Lawal has urged coach Eric Chelle to introduce younger players to the national team, warning that relying on an aging core could lead to stagnation. Speaking after Nigeria’s recent performances, Lawal emphasized the need for a timely transition to ensure the team’s competitiveness in upcoming tournaments.

“Fresh legs should come into the Super Eagles because some of the current players are aging,” Lawal said. “If you want to bring in the fresh legs, it has to be now not later. Transition should not wait until players can no longer cope.”

Lawal advocated for a balanced blend of youth and experience, suggesting that scouting be intensified across the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Europe-based Nigerian players, and youth national teams to identify talented prospects. This approach, he believes, will help the Super Eagles rebuild effectively and achieve long-term success.

With growing pressure on coach Chelle to deliver results, Lawal’s comments highlight the need for strategic squad renewal and player rotation. The coming months will be crucial in determining which young players get the chance to prove themselves on the big stage.
