The President of Traditional Sports Federation of Nigeria Mr. Olomo Agbadabina says lack of funding has been the ultimate challenge bedeviling the development of the sport in the country.
Mr. Olomo made this known in an interview while speaking on how to take the sport to its rightful position in the country adding that the sport will promote African culture if taking seriously.
According to the federation president, traditional sports will get to its greater height in Nigeria if giving adequate attention.
“There are five sports in traditional sports namely: Kokuwa, Dambe, Langa, Ayo and Abula. If we can develop these games from the grass-root, it will go a long way to promote the culture of Africa”.
“Like the traditional wrestling, Nigeria is very good. In November we went to Senegal for ECOWAS Games where we performed well and came out third and now we have the hosting right but we are still looking for sponsorship”.
Mr. Olomo further stated that he will do all within his power to promote the development of traditional sports in Nigeria if there are private investors to partner with the federation.
“In Nigeria we have the athletes but what we need is funding. We are ready to partner with private investors that can help us to host tournaments so that traditional sports can be a household name in Nigeria”.
“so we are calling on corporate organizations to come and invest in traditional sports so as to motivate the athletes”.
